A truly special 50th birthday gift – Perspective sculpture with 3D printing

What is a perspective sculpture?

In short: it’s a sculpture that may seem chaotic and fragmented at first glance, but when viewed from the right angle, it forms a clear and harmonious image. In this case, that image was the number "50"—and not just any "50"!

The sculpture was made up of 50 small sticks, each holding a tiny plate. On these plates were various figurines, icons, and motifs that all represented the recipient’s hobbies, life milestones, or personal symbols. When viewed from a distance, straight on, these little elements formed a clear and impressive “50”. From the side, however, they appeared as a collection of random sticks—hiding the surprise in plain sight!

Behind the scenes of the design

The idea was clear, but the execution was entirely up to us. There was no ready-made 3D model or pre-designed template—we had to design and build the entire composition from scratch.

First, we had to figure out how the sticks and the plates attached to them should be arranged in space so that, from the right viewpoint, they would form the number “50.” Then we brainstormed how to secure everything in a frame that would allow the sticks to stay in place. That alone was already a challenge. Next came designing all the tiny icons—thankfully, our client helped with this part, since they knew the recipient well. Each little figure had its own meaning: a car, motorcycle, rock climbing gear, books, newspapers, a Spider-Man figure, wine glasses, and more.
